South West Coast Path – Route and Gear List

South West Coast Path Gear

Hi folks, just a quick one with details of my daily route and gear list for the South West Coast Path. This is 1013km (630 miles) of wonderful hiking along the UK's longest national trail.

The gear list is a little different to my gear for Te Araroa trail New Zealand. Main differences as follows:

Pack: Osprey Eja 45 litre replaced my Lowe Alpine 45-55 litre pack. The Osprey was lighter and much more comfortable, and had heaps of room for all my gear. I would have been more than OK with a...

Te Araroa Trail Gear List

Below is my Te Araroa trail gear list, which I've combined a little with my South West Coast path gear list (slight differences between the two). It would be a useful guide for any summer multiday tramping/hiking. You may also want to check out my planning page for Te Araroa trail.

Route, gear, food and training - Te Araroa Trail Planning

I did a lot of reading, research, preparation and planning for my Te Araroa trail hike 2017/18 season. I love preparing for a trip (any trip!) It's half the fun of the journey for me. Other people simply throw some things in a pack and go for it.

I started with reading many other peoples Te Araroa trail blogs, and watching Youtube videos. It's a really useful way to get a feel for the trail. Next I downloaded the previous...

Te Araroa Gear – Shoes

Which trainers for Te Aarroa Trail

Te Araroa Trail Shoes

It's decided! - I will be starting Te Araroa with my lightest Merrell trail runners (on the far right) and I will see how they survive 90 mile beach & the mud-fest of the Northland Forests.

If they are all good I'll get a 2nd and 3rd pair. If they fall apart after 14 days it'll be back-up plan b, c or d :-)

Testing My Camping Gear – First Overnight Hike

Camping in Rotorua

Testing my camping gear on an overnight hike

My second gear test for Te Araroa Trail took me further afield than my garden, for a hike and overnight stay in Rotorua. My goals were to:

  • Test my fitness over a distance of 35kms.
  • Walk for the first time with a 12kg pack.
  • Play with my Backcountry Navigator phone app.
  • Check whether my tent was waterproof.

Before the trip, I found the appropriate map section on Backcountry...

Testing My New Tent

Te Araroa Trail Day 122 - Camping outside Upper Travers hut

A New Tent.. Woooooo!

With four months to kick-off before I hike Te Araroa Trail, I thought it would be a good idea to see how my tent and sleep system worked for me.

I set up the tent in the garden โ€“ the perfect way to test everything, with the safety and comfort of a real bed only minutes away! Picking a reasonably cold winters night (3 degrees Celsius with no wind or rain forecast) I unwrapped my lovely new items.

I pitched my Hilleberg Enan tent during the day,...
