The Lockett Range and Mt Cobb Tops
We made the most of great weather over the New Year, and headed into the Cobb to traverse the Lockett Range and Mt Cobb tops of the Peel Range. As usual, the Kahurangi National Park didn't disappoint, and we enjoyed a superb few days exploring the glaciated lansdscape. It was one of those trips that makes you realise how many other many other possibilities there are up there, and makes you want to go back again and again.
We began with a...
Waipakihi River - Kaimanawa Forest Park
Today's hike was one of those where we left a lot to chance.
The aim was to head to the Waipakihi hut from Mount Urchin, but were being all spontaneous about it. To be honest we hadn't read up on it much and the weather wasn't being particularly kind to us either. At some point in the past, I had downloaded a gpx file of the routes to Waipakihi hut onto my Backcountry Navigator (topo map app) on my phone, so this acted as our guide.
Around the Mountain Ruapehu - Day 3
This morning the weather gave us a window of opportunity to get off the mountain. The forecast was fine with lighter winds until around 11am, before more gales and thunder storms were due to set in. We took the chance and woke at 5.30am for a 6.30 start. After surprisingly decent sleep and a museli bar breakfast, we headed off across the Rangipo Desert towards the Waihohonu hut.

Te Araroa Trail Gear List
Below is my Te Araroa trail gear list, which I've combined a little with my South West Coast path gear list (slight differences between the two). It would be a useful guide for any summer multiday tramping/hiking. You may also want to check out my planning page for Te Araroa trail.

Today's distance walked - approx 30 kms (18.6 miles).
Ascent - approx 922m (3025 ft)
I left the campsite at 6.40am this morning. It was another gloriously sunny day with a little bit of breeze - just how I like it. Out of Marazion there were a couple of little beaches, with epic views of St Michael's Mount. The path was initially road walking out of Marazion, then through farmland. I noticed there were some excellent wild camping opportunities above Trenow Cove.

I spent the first couple of hours after lights out last night, sleeping on the sofa in front of the beautiful open fire in the lounge - which was lovely. I carted myself to bed around midnight. In the morning we woke around 6.45am and all had spare food, so we ate big breakfasts including another Mochatella (mocha with a spoonful of Nutella in it) yum!
We started our walk at 8am. We had 2kms to walk to the road end where we'd start TA again, to the South side of the Rangitata river. This...
