I thru hiked the UK South West Coast Path during June and July 2018. As it turns out I timed my hike to coincide perfectly with the UK's hottest summer on record. The trail took 43 days in total, with a few short days and only 2 full rest days. In all this time I only had a couple of days of rain.
The South West Coast Path is obviously a completely different beast to New Zealand's Te Araroa trail. It is roughly 1000Kms - a third of the distance of Te Araroa trail but with half of the...
Today's distance walked - approx 38 kms (23.6 miles).
Ascent - approx 1661m (5449 ft).
I woke at 5.30am and spent a while getting myself together and finishing my blog for the past couple of days. As I was finishing up, a few big fat spots of rain fell on the tent. I got the tent packed away quickly, because I didn't want to carry it wet, but in my haste I damaged a tent pole a little bit which I mended with the duct tape I keep wrapped around my hiking poles. The rain turned out to be...
Today's distance walked - approx 31 kms (19 miles).
Ascent - approx 685m (2247 ft).
I left Janec's house around 6.20am, and wandered back to the seafront in town to get some nice photos. There were a few dog walkers out already, and a couple of swimmers having an early morning dip. I was suddenly gripped by a desperate need for the bathroom (#hikersworstnightmare) but you won't find any bushes to duck behind, or a toilet that's open in Teignmouth before 7am, so in a state of some crisis, I...
I've had a few questions about what I eat on the trail, and food is of course a favourite topic of conversation amongst all long distance hikers!
Below is my routine for the South West Coast Path. It's different to Te Araroa Trail New Zealand, as resupply is so much easier. Even so, I carry at least 3 days worth of food with me, as the smaller villages and hamlets only have tiny grocery stores, or nothing at all. On the other hand, I'm trying to keep the pack weight down as much as I can....
Today's distance walked - approx 32 kms (20 miles).
Ascent - approx 1020m ( ft).
I woke up at 5.10am this morning, with the feeling that it was a little darker than usual. Even though it was light, the moon was still up and a couple of stars were out. After I'd eaten my breakfast and packed up to leave (which usually takes about an hour) I checked the time again, and it was 5.04am! Grrrrrr... the clock on my phone has done this a couple of times before - and randomly skips ahead an hour,...
Today's distance walked - approx 17 kms (10.5 miles).
Ascent - approx 400m (1312 ft).
I had a fabulous time off trail on days 28 and 29, highlights of which included the St Breward village summer carnival, visiting Bodmin Moor, and seeing practically all of Cornwall from its highest point. The weekend's wildlife treats were seeing a large adder snake on the moors, and watching 3 badgers at close range at night, rooting around and playing, which was really special.
Today I was back on trail,...
