Te Araroa Trail Whanganui to Bulls
Anja, Marcus and I said goodbye to the YHA Whanganui around 8.15am today and walked around the river to the Saturday morning market. Anouck headed off to do a side-trip to Mount Taranaki.
Someone told us that the food selections at the market would be yummy! They didn't disappoint. I opted for a 2nd brekfast of a bacon and egg bap, and took a freshly baked ham roll, and apple pastry for later :-)
Today's walk began on...
Te Araroa Trail Whanganui
I enjoyed another leisurely morning today. I spent the morning getting my replacement backpack packed (the broken one was relegated to the 'spares' cupboard of the YHA). The strap of my last one tore on the 42 Traverse!
Strangely though, this new pack didn't feel quite the same. I had become so used to the feeling of my last one, and I was convinced this was a different size.
Free hostel WiFi also means 'video-calling family' day, so I had lovely...
Te Araroa Trail Whanganui River
I had an amazing night's sleep last night. The Flying Fox has a wonderful vibe about it that ensures you leave your troubles behind. Not that I have any of course.. my biggest dilemmas these days are what flavour museli bar to have this morning! After the drama of a couple of days ago, life is good.
A late start
Anouck, Ines and I left at midday. We were aiming to wild camp tonight about 22kms away. We didn't want to rock up in the middle...
Te Araroa Trail - Road Walking the Whanganui river
Anouck and I were up and out by 6am this morning to beat the heat.

We thought we'd better pause so as not to herd 4 horses in front of us for the next 30kms. We ducked into a driveway and amazingly the horses obediently trotted back past...
Te Araroa Trail Whanganui river
We got up slowly today and awaited the arrival of the van from Taumarunui Canoe Hire. It turned out they had a van going to Pipiriki which would have been our final river destination before exiting for the road walk - so we hopped on board.
We arrived at the campsite at the Whanganui River Adventures headquarters in Pipiriki at around 1.30pm and set up our tents. We spent some time planning the coming weeks from Whanganui to Wellington, then...
Te Araroa Trail on the Whanganui River
Sometimes things really don't pan out as you hoped they would...
Anouck, Anja, Markus and I woke early and packed our bags ready to embark on the Whanganui river stretch of Te Araroa trail. We had a leisurely breakfast in the Blue Duck cafe, and waited for the canoes to arrive at Whakahoro landing.
Canoe hire for Whanganui river journey
The folks from Taumarunui Canoe Hire arrived at the designated time - along with all the other...
