SWCP Day 22. Maenporth to Falmouth

Today’s distance walked – approx 7 kms (4.3 miles).
Ascent – approx 200m (656 ft).

I woke at 4.30am to rumblings of thunder. I lay awake until 5.30 then packed up the tent before the forecasted rain started. I ate my raspberry and white choc muffin, bought yesterday from the Maenporth beach store and had a coffee, before leaving at 6.50am. Big fat drops of rain were just starting to fall. By the time I got to Maenporth beach it was fully raining, so I changed into my still damp shorts (which I’d washed last night). I figured it would be better to walk in shorts which were already wet.

It rained until I reached Swanpool beach a couple of Kms away. I popped into the toilets, and dried off a bit. I decided to book a b&b in Falmouth for tonight, as heavy rain was forecasted and I had jobs to do in town.

I booked into the Seaview Inn, an old pub with rooms above.
I continued along the trail past the lovely Gyllyngvase beach and along the seafront around to Pendennis Point and then past the shipyards into town. The views back around the headlands to Nare Point and across to St Mawes were great, even in the mist.

As I walked into Falmouth I went past the shipyards and the docks, which were pretty impressive. Walking into town near the harbour was a pleasant surprise. Falmouth was bigger than I thought and has retained its old charm. As I walked down the main street I liked look of the Fuel cafe, so went in for breakfast. Kirsten turned up 20 mins later (unplanned meetup) then Steve turned up 10 mins later (another unplanned meetup!). There are loads of cafes in Falmouth, so it was funny we all ended up in this one.

We had a long lazy morning. At midday, I checked into the Seaview Inn a rustic old pub with rooms above, and a great sea view from my window, as the name suggests. I immediately showered, washed my hair for 2nd time this week (!!) and washed a few items. I walked into town to get food for next 4 days, as there are no big towns coming up and I will try to wild camp.

Menu for the next 4 days is:
– Breakfast: pastries days 1 & 2, museli bars days 3 & 4.
– Lunches: Peanut butter in a wrap. (I found Pics peanut butter in Tesco, but only available in glass jars not slugs, so I had to go with Tesco’s own).
– Dinners: Cheesy flavour ‘mugshots’ (quick cook pasta in a cup) with instant mash and parmesan cheese and broccoli. Yes, I’m carrying broccoli!
– Snacks: Trail mix (500g), dried Mango, couple of bits of fruit, and a pork pie. Berocca tablet once a day.

In the evening I wandered down to The Stable for a cheeky prosecco. Kerstin and Steve joined me at 6pm and we went for a magnificent tapas dinner including wine and dessert at The Mediterranean Kitchen.
I’m going to bed tonight having eaten more than I have in ages – I’ll be up for a while digesting it all!!
Falmouth has been really lovely. I’d like to come back another time and spend more time here.
